DANGELICO: Albert Einstein famously
once said, “Anyone who has never made
a mistake has never tried anything new.”

KILLGO : I love to touch anyone’s life with
fragrance. Once you share about the art
of designing fragrances and what exactly
perfumers do, most people realize many
of the products they use each day have
fragrance in them. Before that, they don’t
necessarily understand that fragrance is
actually created by an artist. Whenever I
have a conversation with someone about
this job, their eyes start to sparkle and they
have this new-found knowledge and they’re
like, “Oh, wow, I’ve never thought of it this
way.” They have the same experience that I
had 19 years ago—a new world opens up.
So just talking about fragrance and
engaging with people at events makes them
think about fragrance in a different way, it
makes them stop and consider. That way,
if they ever read about fragrance or about
some kind of regulatory change that’s taking
place, they’re more informed than they were
before. I think that that’s a big part of what
the association doing: the education piece to
help people better understand.
NOTABLE NOSES
Our industry is known for
being innovative and we can
work around any challenges
that come our way.
How has failure influenced your journey as
a perfumer?
KILLGO: Making mistakes is essential to
the process of creating. I’ve made many
mistakes along the way; I can’t imagine a
perfumer who hasn’t. If you are trying
new ingredients, new combinations
of materials, you are bound to make a
mistake. That’s also how you stumble upon
something remarkable… As soon as you
smell it, you just know it’s going to be
incredible. FN
