DANGELICO: Albert Einstein famously once said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” “ “ KILLGO : I love to touch anyone’s life with fragrance. Once you share about the art of designing fragrances and what exactly perfumers do, most people realize many of the products they use each day have fragrance in them. Before that, they don’t necessarily understand that fragrance is actually created by an artist. Whenever I have a conversation with someone about this job, their eyes start to sparkle and they have this new-found knowledge and they’re like, “Oh, wow, I’ve never thought of it this way.” They have the same experience that I had 19 years ago—a new world opens up. So just talking about fragrance and engaging with people at events makes them think about fragrance in a different way, it makes them stop and consider. That way, if they ever read about fragrance or about some kind of regulatory change that’s taking place, they’re more informed than they were before. I think that that’s a big part of what the association doing: the education piece to help people better understand. NOTABLE NOSES Our industry is known for being innovative and we can work around any challenges that come our way. How has failure influenced your journey as a perfumer? KILLGO: Making mistakes is essential to the process of creating. I’ve made many mistakes along the way; I can’t imagine a perfumer who hasn’t. If you are trying new ingredients, new combinations of materials, you are bound to make a mistake. That’s also how you stumble upon something remarkable… As soon as you smell it, you just know it’s going to be incredible.
