All Noses on Nice

In the weeks leading up to the 2018 World Perfumery Congress ( WPC ), which took place June 5-7 in Nice , France , we caught up with Conference Director and Managing Editor of Perfumer & Flavorist Deniz Ataman to discuss her approach to scent education and also learned her grandmother ’ s secret to completing any look .
LIA DANGELICO , DIRECTOR , COMMUNICATIONS , FRAGRANCE CREATORS ASSOCIATION : How long have you been involved with the WPC and what do you love about the event ?
DENIZ ATAMAN : Although this is my second time working on the WPC , it ’ s my first time as conference director . I ’ m thrilled that we ’ re taking the event to Nice and to the heart of perfumery .
What I love about the WPC is the people . I ’ m lucky to work with a team of advisors who know the ins and outs of the industry and who can help me find the pulse of what our audience needs to know to move forward in their careers . I never thought I ’ d meet the noses of some of the most iconic fragrances — and here they are , teaching master perfumer courses ! I think about the students attending these courses and feel their excitement — some have reached out to me to say , “ I never thought I ’ d get a chance to learn from the perfumer who inspired me to become a perfumer !” The skill and artistry behind perfumery is passed down from generation to generation , and that bond between teacher and student is strong . It ’ s one of the most compelling aspects of the craft . I feel honored to help with that .
DANGELICO : Planning large industry events is no easy feat , how does your team prepare for the event and stay on track since it only takes place every two years ? Also , perfumers are an incredibly creative and artistic group , does that put more pressure on you to elevate event design , flow , educational sessions , etc .?
ATAMAN : It takes a village ! I have an amazing events , marketing , and editorial team . Since the event is every two years ,
